Arctic Tern, sterna paradisea, Svalbard
Arctic Tern ready to defend - and that means attacking the photographer - above its nest, which it constructed in gravel alongside a road at the scientific research base in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, 1200km from the North Pole. Arctic terns migrate more than any other species of any known animal - up to 70,000km to Antarctica and back to the Arctic every year.
